In the southern hemisphere, north is where the sun lives. A north-facing living zone gets winter sun deep into the room when the sun sits low, and — with correct eaves — shade in summer when it sits high. That's free heating in July and free cooling in January, every year, forever.

• Running costs: well-oriented homes routinely cut heating and cooling energy by 20–40% compared to identical floor plans facing the wrong way
